2023 Newsletter

2023 newsletter

Dear Member

With Anita standing down it falls to me, the new Chairman to write a few words.

My name is Ian Drainer, you may have seen me on the courts sometimes playing and sometimes brushing or blowing the courts in my role as courts officer. I moved to Shipton in late 2011 and one of the first things I did was to join the tennis club. I couldn’t believe we had such a great facility in the village alongside the very active village hall. I joined the coaching programme and found this and the members very friendly and inviting. I soon had a regular weekly doubles game and lots of invites to help look after the courts.

In turn I ended up on the committee.

I hope to do as good a job as Anita and all the other Chairs who have stepped up to take on the reins.

After 4 years of battling to try and improve the facilities with floodlights I have to say that I will not be looking at applying again or for any clubhouse whilst Chair.

I would however still like to make the club the envy of other local clubs and hope that you will support me and the committee in those endeavours.

I want other people who move into the village or see our courts to think as I did that it is a great facility and  want to be a part of it.

Can I remind you that there is access to the hall changing room, toilet and new tap 24hrs a day. If the hall is closed, then access is via a fob. Please contact Lee at the hall and make use of it. Email: Lee Wyatt-Buchan

The Wimbledon Ballot has been taken out of the Club’s hands but if you Opted In on the LTA website before February you may be lucky enough to be allocated two tickets.

ENTRY TO THE COURTS: The code will be changed on Saturday 1 April at 9am.  You will be informed of the new code by Friday 31 March by email if you have paid your subscription. Otherwise, it will be on receipt of your subscription fees.

Here’s to an enjoyable year of tennis in 2023.

Ian

Highlights from the AGM 2022

Paul Miller received the Archie Clark Trophy for long service on the Committee as development officer.

The Junior Award went to Matias Sabou

The winner of this award is chosen by Faith Heron our club coach and I quote “This young man, who’s 10 yrs old, was a year ago, playing in a red group.  He was playing with some success from the service line but then --- Fast forward a year and he’s playing a very good baseline game. He turns up to sessions early with a big smile on his face, has infectious enthusiasm, chases every ball and strives to improve. He’s the first to answer any tennis questions asked and talks in sessions about his tennis coaching findings on YouTube!” Long may his enthusiasm for tennis continue and hopefully it will bring him much enjoyment.

Apart from this certificate he gets £50 to spend on tennis related equipment.
