2024 Championship Report

The annual Wychwoods Tennis Club Championship is now complete, concluding with a strong and enjoyable finals day played in pretty decent weather.  The tournament was played across several months with 65 players and played in good spirit.

Many thanks to all who came to support and watch both the finals and trophy presentations - and huge appreciation for the superb BBQ goes to Chris Bird.

Championship Winners

Men's Singles - Freddie Frithz

Men's Over 50s Singles - Mark Stratford

Men’s Doubles – Freddie Frithz and  Dan Bizzarro

Ladies Singles - Ali Buckley-Sharp

Ladies Doubles - Ali Buckley-Sharp and Denise Shepherd

Mixed Doubles - Philippa Middleton and Freddie Frithz

 Under 10s - Bill Owen

Under 14s - Kiril Egan

Under 18s - Deavel Constable

Special Mention

Freddie Frithz, who managed to win all three finals in which he played - men’s doubles, men’s singles and finally mixed doubles. What a huge achievement and massive well done to Freddie. But another shout out to goes to Mark Stratford, who played in three finals and won the Men’s Over 50s Singles.

It was also a privilege to have former club Chair Anita Hollingdale there throughout to present the trophies and awards and we all fondly remembered her dear husband Roger, also a past Chair, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Highlights

The day began with a mixture of power play in the Men’s Doubles from Freddie and partner Dan Bizzarro, against the finesse of Brad Payne and Mark Stratford with Freddie and Dan winning 6-3 7-6. Meanwhile the Ladies Singles Final was being fought out in a tough match, with long rallies, between the eventual victor Ali Buckley-Sharp and Karen Purvis 6-1 6-3.

On the far court the juniors were in full flight - and my goodness even the under 10s hit the ball so well. The Under 10s Final was won by Bill Owen 2-4 4-1 10-3 against Luca Smith, with the Under 14s won by Kiril Egan 6-0 6-0 against Miguel Fyfe.

Then came on the big guns of the Under 18s and it was wonderful to see how much these young guys have improved as they grow and get ever more strategic in their play with Deavel Constable beating Alex Williamson 6-2 6-3.

With lunchtime in view, the BBQ was moving into action, while Mark Stratford - beaten finalist in the 2023 Men’s Over 50s Final - against the 2023 victor Phil Dunk. It was tight as a drum in 2023 and again this year, with Mark coming out on top 6-3 2-6 7-5.

The Ladies Doubles Final was happening too with Karen, Ali and Denise back on court alongside Clare White, partner to Karen, and it was a terrific spectacle, quite attritional in a good way, with Ali Buckley-Sharp and Denise Shepherd winning 4-6 6-1 6-1.

We switched things about order-wise as the day continued, balancing courts and players. As you can see some names had several outings on the day but that is their own ‘fault' for being so good at tennis. The Men’s Singles Final started between (yes you guessed it) Freddie Frithz and last year’s losing singles finalist Alex Hollingdale, with Freddie winning this one 6-4 7-6.

By now the crowds had subsided after quite a long day - and with the BBQ a distant memory - only the die-hards watched the final match of the day the Mixed Doubles Final with Philippa Middleton and Freddie beating Denise Shepherd and Mark Stratford.

What was fitting was the final presentation of awards for the Mixed Doubles was to four players, who across the day had all won one trophy at least.

The Plate winners were:

Men's Singles - Adam Thomas

Men's Over 50s Singles - Craig Ogden

Ladies Singles - Debbie Mills

Ladies Doubles - Kate Kaye & Barbara Layton

Mixed Doubles - Tilly Painter & Dan Symons

Men’s Doubles – Chris Powley & Richard Whittington

On Sunday 10 September the Summer Tournament Finals Day brought together those who had succeeded across the various competitions, and we had some superb and highly competitive tennis.

Highlights were:

Russell Taylor retaining his singles trophy (6-3 6-1) despite stiff opposition from an excellent Alex Hollingdale who played really well against challenging tennis - and then there was a fantastic doubles match too with Russell and Simon Lyle winning (6-2 6-3) against Matt Beamish and Phil Payne, who were both performing very well.

An impressive day Ali Buckley-Sharp competed in all three finals on the same day - singles, doubles and mixed - but it was not to be for Ali this year but well done on getting through and playing such good tennis throughout.

Phillipa Middleton played and won the Ladies Singles and it was a war of attrition across three sets against Ali with errors on both sides hard to find with such long rallies. 6-1 5-7 6-2.

In the Ladies Doubles, a powerful display from Caroline Watson and Hisae Hollingsworth brought victory to them against Ali Buckley-Sharp and Phillipa Middleton 6-2 4-6 6-3 in what was a gripping match to watch.

Phil Dunk watched on by his wife and daughter, fought and won the club's first ever Men's Singles Over 50s against the ever elegant and consistent Mark Stratford but on the day Phil kept his cool in two tie-breaks to win 7-6 7-6 and the standard - given that this is for the older players - was top notch.

The Mixed Doubles went to superb club coach Faith Heron and Lee Wyatt-Buchan and with Lee's power play and Faith's deft backhand this was a hard act to match 6-2 6-3 v Ali Buckley-Sharp and Phil Payne.

The Juniors played their finals on the day with the Egan brother proving to be very strong challengers with Kiril beating Felix Knights Heath in the under 10's singles mixed and Marko beating Miguel Fyfe in the under 14 mixed.

Alex Williamson and Deavel Constable played in the boys under 17 final and proved to be equal opponents winning one set each and taking it to a Championship tie break. Alex proved too strong in the end and won the cup.

The Plate winners were:

Men's Singles - Tom Archer

Men's Over 50s Singles - Ian Drainer

Men's Doubles - Rob Whitehouse and Craig Ogden

Mixed Doubles - Neal Templey and Philippa Payne

Not all plates were completed.

The tournament was played across several months with more than 70 players representing 20% of the club membership and played in excellent spirit.

2022 Club Championship

Our 2022 championship culminated in some excellent finals on Sunday 11 September which were well supported by friends, family and club members. We held one minutes silence to quietly reflect the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II, followed by a rousing three cheers for King Charles III.

Many thanks to competitors who competed in excellent spirit and to club members who helped with the tournament. Particular thanks to Ian Drainer who was Master of Ceremonies on the day and Chris Bird who prepared a delicious BBQ lunch.

Congratulations to this year’s champions and runners-up and also to the plate winners and runners up:
