On Sunday 10 September the Summer Tournament Finals Day brought together those who had succeeded across the various competitions, and we had some superb and highly competitive tennis.
Highlights were:
Russell Taylor retaining his singles trophy (6-3 6-1) despite stiff opposition from an excellent Alex Hollingdale who played really well against challenging tennis - and then there was a fantastic doubles match too with Russell and Simon Lyle winning (6-2 6-3) against Matt Beamish and Phil Payne, who were both performing very well.
An impressive day Ali Buckley-Sharp competed in all three finals on the same day - singles, doubles and mixed - but it was not to be for Ali this year but well done on getting through and playing such good tennis throughout.
Phillipa Middleton played and won the Ladies Singles and it was a war of attrition across three sets against Ali with errors on both sides hard to find with such long rallies. 6-1 5-7 6-2.
In the Ladies Doubles, a powerful display from Caroline Watson and Hisae Hollingsworth brought victory to them against Ali Buckley-Sharp and Phillipa Middleton 6-2 4-6 6-3 in what was a gripping match to watch.
Phil Dunk watched on by his wife and daughter, fought and won the club's first ever Men's Singles Over 50s against the ever elegant and consistent Mark Stratford but on the day Phil kept his cool in two tie-breaks to win 7-6 7-6 and the standard - given that this is for the older players - was top notch.
The Mixed Doubles went to superb club coach Faith Heron and Lee Wyatt-Buchan and with Lee's power play and Faith's deft backhand this was a hard act to match 6-2 6-3 v Ali Buckley-Sharp and Phil Payne.
The Juniors played their finals on the day with the Egan brother proving to be very strong challengers with Kiril beating Felix Knights Heath in the under 10's singles mixed and Marko beating Miguel Fyfe in the under 14 mixed.
Alex Williamson and Deavel Constable played in the boys under 17 final and proved to be equal opponents winning one set each and taking it to a Championship tie break. Alex proved too strong in the end and won the cup.
The Plate winners were:
Men's Singles - Tom Archer
Men's Over 50s Singles - Ian Drainer
Men's Doubles - Rob Whitehouse and Craig Ogden
Mixed Doubles - Neal Templey and Philippa Payne
Not all plates were completed.
The tournament was played across several months with more than 70 players representing 20% of the club membership and played in excellent spirit.
2022 Club Championship
Our 2022 championship culminated in some excellent finals on Sunday 11 September which were well supported by friends, family and club members. We held one minutes silence to quietly reflect the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II, followed by a rousing three cheers for King Charles III.
Many thanks to competitors who competed in excellent spirit and to club members who helped with the tournament. Particular thanks to Ian Drainer who was Master of Ceremonies on the day and Chris Bird who prepared a delicious BBQ lunch.
Congratulations to this year’s champions and runners-up and also to the plate winners and runners up:
